The Free and Easy Way to Downgrade from Windows Vista to XP
If you have Windows Vista installed on your laptop or PC and yearn for the good old days of Windows XP compatibility and miss the familiar interface, there is a solution that will cost you nothing but your time to do it.
It involves the creation of a virtual PC on your existing machine using Virtual PC 2007 software by Microsoft. A virtual PC is the just what it sounds like. A completely separate computer that runs in software on the same system as your original PC. What this means is that, you can have Windows Vista running on one virtual PC and Windows XP on the other. Both at the same time. This way, you can have the compatibility of Windows XP today and still enjoy the new software coming out that takes advantage of Windows Vista. Once installed correctly, you’ll be able to switch back and forth between operating systems just as easily as you switch between programs now.
The beauty of this arrangement is that it works either way. If you have XP, you can add Vista without losing your Windows XP operating system.
*Note: Before making any system changes, be sure to backup your data to an external drive or other external data storage. Anytime you make major changes to your system, always take this precaution. It will save you a world of pain.
Of course, free only means no money. Creating 2 virtual machines has a cost in terms of PC memory, hard drive space and performance.
Installing applications in a guest OS increases requirements. Increasing memory beyond the minimum required can result in significant performance increases.
A vital thing to remember before choosing a virtual machine is that you’ll need lots of RAM installed on your system. More RAM than you ever thought of needing before. While you’ll probably have enough CPU cycles to spare, you need enough RAM for both operating systems to run comfortably. As long as you have double your comfortable minimum, you should be fine.
To really have optimal performance and take advantage of this setup, you should have at least 2GB RAM, and many gigs of hard drive space. I recommend you strongly consider a 4 GB setup if you plan on running lots of apps simultaneously and plan on using up an extra 20 gigs of drive space.
Also worth noting is that installations of Windows XP or Vista will require their own product keys, regardless of whether your host computer is also running it. Since the virtual PC will see whatever hardware your virtual machine portends to have, it will assume that it is a new computer in need of new activation. You’ll also need a licensed copy of Windows XP to be legitimate. Fortunately, unlike Vista, XP’s EULA doesn’t forbid virtual machines. Only Vista Business and Ultimate can be legally run in a virtual environment. Any other flavours of Vista could cause issues if you need official support.
Microsoft has a blog for Virtual PC 2007 that you should check out before making any changes to get a better feel for what the benefits are of switching to a virtual OS and the kinds of issues you may face in running 2 OS’s at once.

The secrets to speeding up Windows XP lie underneath Windows in the older area. This located before your computer even starts Windows that’s right the old DOS area as they called it back in the old ages. We are going to start at the beginning which is when you first turn on your computer that’s when speed starts.
So if you’re going to learn how to speed up Windows XP and your computer the first area you’ll have to tweak is your boot up time or your startup time and to do that you will have to learn exactly how to get underneath Windows XP and do some pretty tricky tweaks.
This would require a computer tech or programmer to do these. I don’t see myself going to this area and trying to make adjustments because I would be afraid of messing it up. Anyway now you have an idea where you would want to start to create speed within Windows XP. That would be in your boot time or better known as you start up time. It is accomplished by doing something that they called mirroring settings.

Hard drive reorganization or better know as de-fragging.
This is a very overlooked area of optimization that I’m going to talk about right now. Windows has a tendency to put things on your hard drive in a very unorganized fashion which makes your hard drive worked 10 times harder and slower trying to find the files you’re requesting.
So basically you tell your hard drive to go get this file and it has the look under a mess of files that are all topsy-turvy on your hard drive. So what you need is a piece of software that reorganizes and put your hard drive in a very clean organized fashion.
Windows has what they call a defrag and is built into it that is supposed to reorganize your hard drive but it doesn’t work very well so don’t even bother. There are lots of software out there that claim to organize your hard drive but again you are stuck with the problem that some of them suck up all of your memory reserves. Plus, you can’t do any computing while they’re running and even worse you have to remember to run them.
So you need a piece of software that automates some or all of this process and does it in the background so that it doesn’t take all of your memory resources.

Antivirus software is a blessing and a curse. Why do I say that? Well the problem with this type of software is that they are a speed killer. Let’s talk about Spyware.
I really can’t tell you how much I hate spyware when they get on my computer. The fact of the matter is that because they come in the form of advertising they are legal but they drive just about everyone crazy!
Because of the way they lock into your computer get into your registry “Systems Tray” get into your icon tray get into your browser and everything else and then what they do is they start sending messages backwards and forwards to their system through your system in order to find ways to promote to you even though you never asked for the promotions. These are also called spy cookies! We’ll address that in another lesson.
What I really want to concentrate on is really how hard they are on your computer as for as slowing it down to an absolute crawl, crashing it and putting you at risk that’s what spyware does.
So in essence if you really want a fast computer you have to have some sort of spyware removal software. Now there are many of them on the Internet literally hundreds of them and you can pick you can pick and choose.
The problem is finding one that does what you need it to do and what you need a spyware software to do is to protect you as well as remove the spyware . You need a software that does protection as well as a software that does removal. And if at all possible you need to find one that can automate the process.
Now as I mentioned before I have a shortcuts for you. One of them is the fact that I have found a piece of software on Internet that you can get for free that does more to get rid of spyware removal than just about all the others on the internet combined.

Memory optimization and stabilizing is the next area to learn about if you want to create speed. This is done in many different ways! Mostly by changing Windows settings after Windows has loaded up. This method uses the Windows format to do the adjustments.
Our programmer that we hired to look into this says that this is a mistake and that the setting should be done underneath Windows in the area before Windows loads because this makes those type of settings more powerful.
We believe he is right. Judging from the fact that much of the software on the market claims to optimize your computer and doesn’t do a very good job of it. I think I’ve got that other guy beat who was talking about being slow with a few gig of ram. I’m running windows xp on 96 MB of ram! I told my friend Ray if this helps MY computer it will help ANYONE! So I proceeded to install the software and followed the directions.
Now..to back up..before tonight, I had to wait for windows to open, then the programs didn’t want to respond when I tried to close them. Also sometimes I wouldn’t be able to type a full sentence. It was even affecting my curser!
Now, the dialup is connecting me almost immediately. Programs are opening and closing in a snap. My computer is running like I had done what I almost did…(I almost did a total restore again) I’m so glad I didn’t have to do that!

This next concept is so very simple yet quite important to computer speed. What I’m talking about here is the idea that you should use mostly software that is completely or partially automated.
The number one reason most people don’t get their computer in a condition where it is running real fast and optimized is because you have to remember to do many of the things that make it fast on a regular schedule.
If you have to remember it most people will not do it. So you need software that has the ability to be automated on a time clock . You have got to be able to “Set it and forget it” while it operates in the background.
Then your optimization is maintained when you are doing other things more important. That’s really the only type of software that we recommend in our computer speed system.
Why force yourself to remember to do critical optimization scans when some software will remember for you. Now you can use this concept to qualify the software that you use. If it has automated scheduling it is better for you in the long run.

You need to look at computer speed as a computer speed system not as one piece of software that does it all for you. I’m sorry to have to tell you this but computer speed does not come in one box nor does it come in one piece of software. Computer speed comes in the form of a system.
In this course I have itemized the system for you so you will know exactly what the steps are and what items are required to have computer speed when you finish this course.
